Welcome back to my studio! As a Worcester artist, my work often sees me immersed in the vibrant colours of the Malvern Hills or capturing the fleeting beauty of seasonal florals. Yet, there is a singular category of painting that carries a depth of emotional connection unlike any other: the custom pet portrait. This blog post will take you behind the easel, illustrating the unique process of turning a cherished photograph into a timeless piece of original art that truly captures the spirit of your beloved companion.
The bond between a person and their pet is profound, filled with unconditional love, humour, and history. My goal in every portrait commission is not just to render an accurate likeness but to infuse the canvas with the animal's unique personality and soul. If you’ve ever wondered what goes into creating one of these treasured heirlooms, read on—the journey is as rewarding for me as it is for the owner.
Phase 1: The Initial Spark and Inspiration

Every great painting begins with a great consultation. The process starts when you, the owner, reach out with a request for a portrait commission. Crucially, we discuss the photographs. The good quality reference image is my window into your pet’s character, so I guide clients on choosing photos that have excellent lighting, sharp detail, and, most importantly, capture that characteristic expression you know so well - whether it’s a mischievous glint in their eye or a serene, sleepy look. We discuss the pose and the setting. I welcome some short videos showing your beloved pet in action too, as that gives me some dynamic shots to work from . This collaborative start ensures we are aligned on the vision, allowing me to approach the work with the personal, emotional context required to bring the artwork to life.
Phase 2: Preparing the Canvas and Colour Palette
Once the reference is chosen, the transformation begins in my studio as a Worcestershire Artist. Having worked with traditional oil painting techniques for decades and embracing acrylics more recently, the medium is chosen based on the desired finish and the subject matter. The blank canvas is prepared, and I begin the initial sketch. This is a critical stage where I establish the composition and proportions. Unlike a mass-produced piece, this is entirely handmade, a true piece of original art. I spend time mixing the foundational palette, drawing inspiration from the colours and light in the photographs, but also relying on my deep understanding of animal anatomy and fur texture to anticipate how the layers will build. My focus remains fixed on the light - how it catches the curve of an ear or highlights the texture of the nose - because light is what brings any painting to life.
Phase 3: Bringing the Personality to the Surface
The real magic happens when the paint is applied. It’s a process of careful building, moving from broad washes of colour to the intricate details that give the portrait its authenticity. I work meticulously, often focusing on the eyes first. They are the focal point, the element that carries the emotional connection and the pet’s true character. This stage requires both technical precision and emotional engagement; I paint with the memory of their personality in mind. For a custom pet portrait, it’s a meditative process of building layer upon layer until the fur seems tangible and the expression feels alive. Each brushstroke is a commitment to capturing ‘an impression, a moment in time’, which is the heart of all my work. The joy of a portrait commission lies in the slow, meticulous creation of a piece that is utterly unique to its subject.

Phase 4: The Final Reveal and Timeless Legacy
As the painting nears completion, I take time to step back, assessing the overall impact and making final, subtle adjustments to lighting and shadow. The culmination is when the finished original art piece is unveiled to the client. There is nothing more rewarding than seeing an owner connect with the painting of their beloved pet. These portraits become more than just art; they become enduring memorials and celebrations of family.
If you are considering a meaningful way to honour your four-legged family member, a custom pet portrait is a wonderful investment. As your dedicated Worcester artist, I welcome the opportunity to discuss your vision and turn your cherished memories into a magnificent piece of original art that will be treasured for generations.
