Print - Sunflowers and Sedum in a Jar
Print - Sunflowers and Sedum in a Jar
Created in 2021, this artwork was inspired by the techniques of the impressionists, who often favoured painting on wooden panels or even cardboard over traditional canvas. Intrigued by the idea, I decided to order a few wooden panels to experiment with and see how they would affect my creative process. To my delight, I found that I truly enjoyed working on this new surface, and the absence of the familiar 'bounce' that comes with canvas did not diminish my enthusiasm in the slightest.
The subject of this piece was the last of the sunflowers from a generous bouquet, their vibrant hues still captivating despite the passage of time. To add a personal touch, I incorporated sedum from my garden, resulting in a harmonious blend of textures and colours that seemed to sing the praises of the summer season. Together, these blooms formed a cheerful arrangement, filling the space with a sense of joy and warmth that was impossible to ignore.
Each stroke of the brush captured the essence of these jolly flowers, their golden petals and lush foliage serving as a visual representation of summer's abundant beauty. The artwork has since become a constant reminder of the season's splendor, as if I've managed to preserve a little piece of summer on my wall for all to enjoy, day after day.
The experience of painting on wooden panels not only broadened my artistic horizons but also served as a reminder of the importance of experimentation and adaptability in the creative journey. This piece stands as a testament to the power of trying new things and the unexpected discoveries that can emerge when we step outside of our comfort zones. In the end, it is a celebration of the simple joys that can be found in both nature and art, and the ability of both to brighten our lives, even as the seasons change.
