In late August 2022, after a whirlwind Worcestershire Open Studios event that saw over 200 visitors pass through my doors, I was inspired to capture the essence of the last two roses from a generous bouquet gifted by my dear friend Sarah. On that sweltering summer day, these exquisite blooms began to wilt, their delicate petals surrendering to the heat. Yet, even in their fragile state, displayed in a humble tumbler, their innate majesty shone through.

Roses have long been a symbol of beauty and love, and it's easy to see why. Their enchanting allure and timeless elegance are unrivalled among flowers. As I set to work immortalising these blossoms, I couldn't help but marvel at the way they continued to exude an air of regal grace, despite their fading splendor.

To preserve the fleeting beauty of these roses, I employed a blend of precise brushstrokes and expressive techniques, seeking to capture not only their physical appearance but also their intangible essence. As I painted, I felt a deep connection to the flowers, as if they were sharing with me the secrets of their fleeting life and the wisdom they had gained.

Using a combination of my favourite brushes and high-quality paints, I meticulously rendered the roses' intricate petals and the play of light and shadow that danced across their forms. The final piece is a testament to the resilience of beauty, even in the face of adversity.

This painting serves as a poignant reminder that beauty and love can be found in the simplest of things, even as they near the end of their journey. The roses' quiet elegance, captured in their humble tumbler, is a testament to the power of art to reveal the extraordinary hidden within the ordinary and to celebrate the enduring grace of nature's most beloved blossoms.
